The story of Autobianchi

Autobianchi was an Italian brand, founded in 1955. It manufactured cars designed by Fiat and mechanically similar to Fiat vehicles of those times. The Autobianchi badge first appeared on the 1957 Bianchina, a luxurious version of the Fiat 500. To date, the Bianchina cabriolet is one of the most valuable derivatives of the original 500.

The Autobianchi company is a result of an agreement between the bicycle manufacturer Bianchi, tire manufacturer Pirelli, and Fiat. It was in 1967 that Fiat took full control of the joint venture, using it as a platform to research the public acceptance of new technologies, like a transverse engine with front wheel drive and engines produced by robots (the "FIRE" engine).

Once successful, the Autobianchi business control was given to the Lancia management, which later decided to integrate the two brands under the Lancia name. Since the 1990's, the Autobianchi brand has disappeared entirely.

And what about the A112?

In 1969, Fiat launched two new Autobianchi vehicles - the A111 and A112. Unexpectedly, the A111 was the larger car - a small front-wheel drive saloon based on the Fiat 124. The A112 was a supermini built on a platform later to be used by the Fiat 127 (launched in 1971), with a different design.

It offered the same 4-cylinder, 903 cc engine with 42 bhp, and front wheel drive as the 127. The design was a bit more rounded and the A112 had more creature comforts.

The A112 was only offered in a two-box, three doors layout. It had decent room for four adults, and also a decent boot. The A112 was manufactured from 1969 to 1985 in seven "series", each an evolution of the previous, but always based on the same basic platform.

The 903 cc engine survived through the entire life of the A112, and was joined by additional engines from time to time - a 982 cc (58 bhp) Abarth version (1971-1975), a 1,049 cc Abarth with 70 bhp (1975) and a 965 cc engine with 48 bhp in the Elite (1977).

The A112 was replaced by the Autobianchi Y10, which was marketed under the Lancia brand from 1990. Autobianchi manufactured 1.25 million A112.

My A112, 1982 Junior specification with the 903 cc engine, is a 5th series A112. It had three owners since new, and has less than 55,000 km on the odometer. It is not restored, and still in its original red paint. It awaits January 1st 2012, to be registered as a collectors car in the Israeli department of motor vehicles.
